The semantic web
The semantic web is known as an extension of the world wide web. The Web can do many things, like searching and purchasing etc but these tasks can only be performed with human direction as they were built originally by humans however the difference with the semantic web is that the information is understandable by computers. For example, it says on wiki 'The semantic web is a vision of information that is understandable by computers, so that they can perform more of the tedious work involved in finding, sharing, and combining information on the web'. The semantic web is supposed to make the services more defined and satisfy the needs of both humans and machines to use the web, however the data is not part of the web. In simple terms it can be described as a web of data.

do you think this idea takes away from the idea of the internet being non-linear? Do you think half the idea of the internet is that you can search for sites and stumble across new ones, would semantic web and how specific it is take this away?
ReplyDeleteI personally dont think Semantic Web would take away the ability of Hyperlinking. Even though it is incredibly specific (and possibly becoming more specific) there are still thousands of websites based on the same thing.
ReplyDeleteSo if the semantic web was helping you find a holiday on a google search, it would still allow many options of holiday company choices. And while on those websites, there are still hyperlinks which attract our attention.
We as a society are nosey and always want to find out more, hyper-linking gives us the perfect opportunity to get lost online, semantic web wont stand in the way of that.
but because the semantic web is supposed to be a system that is to suit your needs, do you think that the data base would already know where you would want to go on holiday?
